About the city

In 2006 Trondheim was home to around 165 000 inhabitants and is the third biggest city in Norway. The city was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997 BC, and occupies a special place in Norwegian culture and history. It was and is now again a popular destination for pilgrimages.

Today Trondheim is spoken of as one of the typical wooden cities of Europe, and the city centre has many special wooden buildings, some built as far back as the 1700s.

Trondheim still has a strong position as the centre of trade for central Norway, and also claims to be the nation’s technological capital. The city is a centre of education and technical and medical research, and hosts around 25000.

Climate

In the beginning of April the spring has not yet fully blossomed in the city, and in the surrounding mountains the snow is still ready for the avid skier. The weather is often unstable, so prepare for both winter and spring. If you take the time, cross country skiing up in the ski areas in Bymarka is normally nice early in April.
